The need for petabyte storage for fast SDD disks were, not too long ago, limited to only a few companies in the world. The reasons were high prices and small SSD disk capacities, which meant a high cost of the used gigabyte capacities. The efficient software solutions, like compression and deduplication, used to expand data capacities, but the costs for such solutions were still higher than the use of classic available disks.
The reduction of the SSD disk cost was majorly influenced by the development of modern technology and we can praise our company for being one of the first storage providers that build in 15,3TB big SSD disks. NetApp uses this strategy to increase their sales of All Flash FAS systems (AFF) even faster. The combination of 15,3TB SSD disks on 2U rack shelves, with the help of the previously mentioned mechanisms, makes up to 32U rack servers, equipped with 2TB SATA disks. The 15,3TB disks are the solution for users, who had to bother with compromises and searched for low latency as well as big capacity. This technology is based on the 3D NAND principle of disk manufacturing, also known as V-NAND (Vertical NAND). This is a type of production, which prints circuits in 3 dimensions and that will enable big expandability in the future, for the same space as silicon wafers.
In the year 2017 we are expecting 32TB SSD disks that are going to even further shock the market of classic spinning disks and accelerate their final demise and withdrawal from the market. The future decisions of buyers is therefore crystal clear.
